Piecing Desert Sky

Pieced from April 25, 2011 through May 10, 2011

I quilted this on July 15, 2011 for the Half Squares Retreat in April 2012. We invited Eileen Urbanek, a Judy Niemeyer certified instructor to teach a beginner paper piecing class and this is the pattern she suggested.

The quilt takes only 24 fat quarters, 12 light and 12 medium to dark. The pattern teaches Niemeyer's paper piecing method using the Add A Quarter ruler and teaches curved piecing. Many people shy away from curved piecing but the large gentle curves in this pattern are perfect for beginners to learn this technique.

I used earth tone batiks but you can use bright colors, monochromatic colors and Eileen told me it looks great with black, white and red. The fabrics don't have to be batik either.

I quilted an allover pattern called Celestial by Sweet Dreams Quilt Studio. Here are some close ups of the quilting.

The retreat is on April 19-22, 2012 in Smithville Texas. Half Squares Retreat

Article on Attaching Binding

I took pictures of how I attached binding to this quilt and published an article on my blog. You can see the article www.quilt-notes.blogspot.com.
