Space Devils For David
Making Space Devils
I made this quilt for my husband, David, who will be retiring from NASA in a few years. He started at Johnson Space Center in Houston in the early 1980's when the third Shuttle mission was underway. During his career he was able to view numerous Shuttle launches and landings but I think the most meaningful one for him was the last launch in July, 2011.
I started this quilt with a printed panel from Benartex's Space: The New Frontier collection. I had the panel for about three years before I decided to use it on this quilt.
Fussy Cut and Applique
The centers of some of the paper piecing units are squares. Instead of using the background fabric I chose to fussy cut planets for the squares. The planets came from the Benartex Solar System fabric.
There is also a large open space where I cut out larger pictures from the Benartex panel.
This is a picture of the earth from the panel and appliqued in the open space.
For the backing I used the Kaufman Stargazers fabric. I used black thread and quilted an allover design from Sweet Dreams Quilt Studio called Celestial Sky.
